Turning off Cortana Features When You Do not Want It

Microsoft has developed Cortana in such a way, and integrates it more deeply into Windows 10. And they do it every time a major operating system update is done. Although it is actually quite useful, because Cortana can help you find anything inside the OS, help you email, display notifications, design reminders, or do anything using the user's voice, but some users object to the feature and choose to turn it off.

Before the Anniversary Update update comes, Cortana can be turned off by pressing just one button. But now the same thing can not be done. Problems are complicated with the presence of Windows 10 Creators Update, where - according to some user reports - shutting down Cortana can disrupt the overall search function of Windows. And the only way to normalize it is to do a clean install.

Basically Cortana is a virtual assistant who will learn the habits of the user when operating his computer. Thus the user can use the tool to help him do many things. Or, if it feels annoying, users can also choose to turn it off.

Prevent Cortana recognize your habit

First, go to Cortana settings to bypass the system path where the feature works to monitor your habits in using the computer. Here's how.

  • Click on the search box section or the Cortana icon (small circle) located right next to the Start button.
  • Now you are in the settings screen. Then turn off each button, from the position On to the Off position.
  • The next step is to scroll to the top of the settings panel, and click on Change what Cortana knows about me section, in the cloud section.
  • Microsoft will retrieve a page from the Internet called Personal Information, which is contained in the same Start pane.
  • When this page opens, scroll to the bottom, and tomboll Clear.

In order to better serve the users, Cortana will collect data on how you talk and type. But if you want to turn it off, you need to perform the following follow-up steps.

  • Press the Start button
  • Click on Settings, then select Privacy
  • In the left pane, look for Speech, Inking & Typing
  • Click the 'Stop getting to know me'

Remember that turning off the function will also turn off the dictation feature of Windows 10. Do not do that if you still need dictation feature.

Turn off Cortana completely

The above steps are only partial. Cortana will not respond to the user's voice anymore, but the feature is still running in the background, waiting to be called. To kill Cortana completely, you need to do some other things.

  • If you are a Windows 10 Pro user

Press the search section, and type 'Edit group policy' in the search box. Once open, navigate to Computer Configuration >> Administrative Templates >> Windows Components >> Search.

Look for the menu labeled Allow Cortana, and do double-click to open it. Click Disabled, and then press OK.

  • If you are a Windows 10 Home user

Open Registry Editor by typing regedit in the search field. Point menu to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> SOFTWARE >> Policies >> Microsoft >> Windows. Then do right click on the Windows directory, and select New >> Key. Type 'Windows Search' in it, and hit enter.

Select 'Windows Search'. And in the right pane, right-click on an empty area and select New >> DWORD (32-bit) Value. Then type "AllowCortana ', and hit enter. The next step is to double-click on AllowCortana, and type 0 under 'value data'.
