How to Turn on or Shut Down Windows Defender

Several years ago Windows Defender was released in order to anticipate growing growing spyware threats. In Windows 8 and 10, Windows Defender comes in an expanded version that also provides PC protection against malware attacks. This version is part of the Security Essentials package.

It's just that the redesigned Defender has led to a "conflict" with some kind of security application, where an anti-virus might clash with Windows's built-in app, which then raises performance issues. That is why then Microsoft gives the option to turn off Defender when a trial version of Security Essentials is installed into a laptop or PC.

But if you do not activate the Norton or McAfee trial, or Avast (two antiviruses known to conflict with Windows Defender), the Defender software will not start automatically. So how can we turn on or turn off Windows Defender? Here's how.

Check if Windows Defender is active

Windows Defender has a small shield icon that is visible on the taskbar. Check the taskbar section and check if this icon is working normally or not. When not active, there will usually be a red cross in the upper right corner. Click the icon to open the Windows Defender app. But if you can not find the icon, type 'Defender' in the search field, and then launch the app.

An app page will open. If you find a lot of red in the page - in the red stripe above, the Turn on button is red, and a small image showing the red screen with a cross - it means that Defender is being turned off. The red colors will turn green when the application is activated.

But if Defender is enabled, and you still see a lot of red, this is because Defender asks users to update their definitions.

How to activate Windows Defender

If Defender is inactive, this could be because you already have another antivirus application in Windows that you use. Perhaps you are not sure of the antivirus capabilities that already exist and more trust in the ability of the default software such as Windows Defender. If this is the choice, then you should uninstall antivirus before activating Defender.

After uninstalling, enable Defender in exactly the way as above. Press the big button marked Turn on, and afterwards Windows Defender will start to monitor and protect your computer.

Also make sure that Defender real-time protection works well. You can activate it by shifting the Real-Time Protection button to the "On" position.

How to turn off Windows Defender

Why do I need to turn off Defender? Is not this one software very useful for computer security? You need to turn off Windows Defender if you have installed other antivirus that you trust more. Under normal conditions, Defender will become inactive if there are other antivirus installed on the same system.

Launch the Defender app in the same way as written above. Then click the Settings icon, and in the window that opens, slide the Real-time Protection button from the on position to the off position.

Remember one thing: what you do is a temporary solution to turn off Defender. This app will run automatically when needed, for example to make your PC more secure.
