ASUS Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro REVIEW

Last August 2017, we got an invitation from ASUS to attend the launching of their new smartphone family, Zenfone 4, in Taipei, Taiwan. ASUS launched the Zenfone 4 family with the slogan "We Love Photo", which illustrates that the smartphone of this family will carry features that feature photo capture capabilities. One member of Zenfone 4 family, Zenfone 4 Max Pro, was released by ASUS, early September 2017, and the results of our tests have also been shown.

Design

ASUS again offers different designs for the Zenfone 4 family, including for Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro, when compared with the Zenfone family 3. One that should be instantly seen is the fingerprint scanner that ASUS now put on the front side instead of on the back like a family Zenfone 3. In addition, Zenfone 4 family also has a corner with a wider curvature when compared with the Zenfone family 3.

Switch to Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro specifically. This smartphone comes with a body that has an overall dimension of 154.02 mm x 74.83 mm x 6.85 mm. One thing is directly implied when viewing the dimension information, this smartphone has a fairly thin body, below 7.0 mm! As for the length and width, it can be quite common for a smartphone with 5.5 "screen at this time.

This smartphone is not designed to have a thin bezel. The bezel on the left and right sides of the screen is about 2 mm in size, not too thick, but not thin. As for the upper and lower sides of the screen, ASUS actually uses a thick bezel, because they also place various components in the area. When the 5.5 "screen that this smartphone uses compared to the front side, the screen-to-body ratio is only about 72%. This figure is somewhat low for smartphones in the current era.

The fingerprint scanner, which also functions as the Home button, is placed on ASUS under the display bezel, flanked by Back and All Apps navigation keys. Both of these navigation buttons are equipped with backlight, which makes it easy to see in dark conditions. As they used to do in their smartphone line, ASUS also pinned the extra functionality in the All Apps button on this smartphone. When the button is pressed for a few seconds, then a command can be executed, with options to take a screenshot, open a menu, or enable the split screen feature. Back and All Apps Button is now equipped with a backlight.

The unique feature of Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro is in the top screen bezel, where ASUS puts a dual-camera system for this selfie smartphone smartphone. Both selfie cameras from this smartphone are on the right side of the earpiece. Meanwhile, LED flash for selfie camera is placed on the left side of the earpiece. In addition, the proximity sensor and light sensor was also on the left side of the earpiece.

Switching to the side of this smartphone, ASUS puts up / down volume buttons and power on the right side. While on the left side, there is a tray for SIM Card and Micro SD. ASUS chose to use a hybrid tray for this smartphone, where users have to choose whether to use dual Nano-SIM or one Nano-SIM and one Micro SD.

3.5 mm audio connector is still included ASUS on this smartphone, a thing that can be said quite rarely done by manufacturers who offer smartphones with a fairly thin body. Along with Micro USB connectors, mic, and speakers, the audio connector is placed on the lower side of the smartphone. For some reason ASUS still uses the Micro USB connector for Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro, not the Type C connector as they have to offer on some Zenfone 3 family smartphones.

The rear side of this smartphone is only inhabited by the main camera of this smartphone, along with dual-tone LED flash supporters. The rear body of the smartphone is made of metal-like material, with two strips for the antenna located near the top and bottom side of the smartphone. As for the front side, ASUS covered the body and screen of this smartphone with Gorilla Glass. In general, like a smartphone with a thin metal body other, this smartphone is quite slippery when held.

Sales Package

ASUS offers a Zenfone 4 Selfie smartphone with a sales package that is quite good. They include some equipment for supporters of this smartphone, including headsets and softcase. In addition, of course power adapters, ejector pins for SIM / Micro SD trays, as well as fixed data cables they include.

The presence of softcase in the sales package will greatly assist users in overcoming the body of this smartphone is quite slick. Softcase given is quite good. Unfortunately, the material used is a bit too loud, so the buttons on the smartphone was a bit hard pressed when this softcase is used. Our advice, use this softcase the first time you start wearing it. However, look for another more convenient case to operate the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro buttons.

Specification

SoC "million people" for the upper middle class, Snapdragon 625, relied upon by ASUS as the motor of Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro. Previously, ASUS also offered the SoC this one in Zenfone 3 family. Snapdragon 625, with octa-core Cortex A53 processor 2.0 GHz, Adreno 506 GPU, and DSP Hexagon 546, it still offers the ability that can be said is very qualified for the current needs on smartphone.

4 GB of RAM and 64 GB internal storage included for this smartphone. The 4 GB RAM capacity may no longer be big, but it is still more than enough for the various smartphone usage scenarios today. While for storage, the capacity offered is quite large, and can still be expanded by using Micro SD, up to 256 GB. Unfortunately, that when done will sacrifice the second SIM Card slot.

The 5.5 "screen is offered by ASUS for the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro smartphone, with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. ASUS mentioned that they are using AMOLED panels for this smartphone, which should offer excellent display quality. Gorilla Glass 2.5D is used by ASUS to protect the screen, and most of the front side of this smartphone.

The battery in this smartphone carries a capacity rating of 3000 mAh, a capacity that can be said to be standard in the middle class. Can not be said big, but not too small, considering this smartphone comes with a fairly efficient SoC power. ASUS mentioned that this smartphone supports fast charging. We will certainly do the testing for battery life and battery charging for this smartphone.

Censor: Complete

ASUS equip this smartphone with a number of sensors to support its use. Sensors that can be said is a standard requirement for smartphones today, such as accelerometer, gyroscope, e-compass, proximity sensor, and light sensor available in Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro. Fingerprint scanners, as we mentioned before, are also available.

For the connectivity side, ASUS certainly equips this smartphone with 4G support, with support for LTE Bands 3, 5, 8 for FDD-LTE and 40 for TDD-LTE available, which is compatible with LTE mobile operators in Indonesia. LTE offered by this smartphone is limited to Cat. 4 (Uplink 150 Mbps / Downlink 50 Mbps). This is indeed in line with that offered by mobile operators in Indonesia, at least for now. However, this also means that users may not be able to feel a higher speed when using this smartphone overseas, in a country that already offers speeds above Cat. 4. Other connectivity options offered by ASUS include WiFi 802.11 b / g / n and Bluetooth 4.2. Unfortunately, ASUS does not include NFC and support for 5 GHz WiFi on this smartphone.

Lastly, let's discuss the camera from the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro smartphone. The camera is a mainstay of ASUS for the Zenfone 4 line, with Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro, as the name suggests, comes with more capabilities on the selfie side. For selfie cameras, ASUS equips this smartphone with dual-camera, 24 MP DuoPixel and 5 MP with 120 ° wide-angle. The main "self" smartphone smartphone, with 24 MP sensor, comes with a 6P f / 1.8 lens with 83 ° field of view, actually using the Sony IMX362 sensor, which is actually only marketed as a 12 MP sensor. However, according to ASUS explanation, they take advantage of dual-pixel features in the sensor for 24 MP DuoPixel feature on this smartphone. This selfie camera is equipped with Softlight LED flash support, and selfie video recording capability up to 4K 30 fps resolution.

As for the rear camera, ASUS equip this smartphone with a 16MP sensor, with a field of view 80 °. This camera comes with LED support "real tone" flash. ASUS also offers video recording capabilities of up to 4K 30 fps resolution in the rear camera, with support for a more stable EIS video.

Camera

The Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro comes with a unique, dual-camera selfie camera with a combination of 24 MP DuoPixel and 5 MP wide angle sensors. While the main camera uses 16 MP sensor Sony IMX351, with field-of-view 80 °.

When it says that the camera is one of the charms of Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro, yes, it can be said to be true. Capabilities that carried the camera from this smartphone, both the camera selfie and main camera, fairly adequate and not disappointing. Only, it should be remembered, that it applies under certain conditions.

The main camera in this smartphone has excellent potential, which can be proven with good details that can be captured by the camera in the resulting photo.

Enabling DuoPixel feature allows the camera to wait a few seconds before it can be reused. The picture is large (24MP), and can be useful if you want to do magnification, super-tight cropping, or printed large size (once). However, if juxtaposed with the default settings, DuoPixel photo results are perceived not to present extra detail. There are even some conditions that display oddities in the image. Oh yes, photos in this mode also tend to be brighter results. Sometimes too bright.

Without DuoPixel mode, the selfie camera on Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro transforms into one of the best selfie cameras we've tested. Details are high and look classy. Selfie flash was so can be used (DuoPixel turn off flash). Yes, without DuoPixel, the selfie camera is very good. The shooting results do not get too bright. The results of video recording also looks good.

ASUS also offers Portait Mode feature, which can produce bokeh effects in photos. This bokeh effect is only active when the smartphone detects a human object near the camera. Unfortunately, the resulting blur effect is too strong and the bokeh form tends to be like a soft focus effect, not a natural bokeh. Furthermore, there is no option to adjust the power of this bokeh effect either before the photo is taken or after the photo is taken.

As for the wide angle selfie camera, the sensor used in this smartphone only allows taking photos up to 5 MP resolution only. The results of this photo with a wide angle selfie can properly cover a larger area. However, the quality of the photograph is not as good as the main camera and only feasible in the bright room.

The SelfieMaster menu is the mainstay of Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro. You can activate the beauty effects in video, photos, even to livestreaming. Yes, you can smooth the faces that appear on livestream with Youtube, Facebook, and other apps.

So Camera Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro Good or Not?
OK, we realize that there are many pros and cons of our own side, regarding the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro camera. so let's make a special plus-minus for the camera.

Weakness of camera Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro:

  • DuoPixel is perceived as less effective. Turning off flash, making shooting slower, and the quality is sometimes not as good without using it. Better not to use, because the normal mode is very good quality.
  • The ultra-wide camera has poor quality. Only suitable for outdoor shooting
  • Bokeh portrait mode can not be set and too powerful effect
  • The form of bokeh is not natural and resembles a soft focus effect
  • Not equipped with OIS
  • We are missing out on the settings of the image parameters

Excellence Zenfone camera 4 Selfie Pro:

  • The main camera is of high quality. It could be one of the highest in its class.
  • Selfie camera with wide / normal high quality lens. One of the best, can even compete with the 20MP-24MP on other smartphones.
  • Selfie ultrawide camera is an exciting bonus that can be utilized for photos and videos in bright conditions.
  • Full shooting mode, super-complete manual mode.
  • 4K video for main camera and selfie
  • EIS is very helpful in making video with main camera
  • There is a shortcut to turn on the camera quickly
  • Selfie Master is quite effective for a variety of selfie needs. It even works for livestreaming (BeautyLive).
  • Flash for selfie is quite smooth and tends to produce natural photos

Conclusion: We really like the quality and capabilities of Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro camera. The quality is the best. You just need to ignore the extra features that can degrade the quality of the photograph.

Battery

The battery in the Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro smartphone has a capacity of 3000 mAh, a capacity that is "standard" for today's midrange smartphones. Previously, ASUS has also offered a smartphone with the same SoC, Snapdragon 625, with 3000 mAh battery as well, the Zenfone 3 ZE552KL. The smartphone can offer good endurance, and it should also be expected of users of Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro.

As for the battery charging, from empty state, we need about 1 minute 30 seconds to reach 2% point, where smartphone can be turned on. Then, charging power from 2% to 100% takes about 1 hour 54 minutes. Overall, from empty to full, the rechargeable battery of this smartphone takes 1 hour 55 minutes with the adapter of the sales package. This time note shows that Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro offers a fairly fast battery charging, it can not be said to be very fast, but it's faster than a 3000 mAh battery charging without fast charging capability.

Conclusion

Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro is present as the latest flagship ASUS in the middle-class smartphone market in Indonesia. This smartphone can be said to look quite different from its predecessor, the Zenfone 3 line, where ASUS now puts fingerprint scanner on the front side of the body, under the screen, and does not use tempered glass for the back of the body, switch to metal unibody. The body of the smartphone itself is quite sturdy, but quite slippery when held.

ASUS offers a 5.5 "AMOLED display on this smartphone, with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This display can display a fairly good view, better than what is offered by the smartphone with AMOLED screen before from ASUS, Zenfone Zoom S. Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro comes with the Android operating system 7.1.1 Nougat with ZenUI 4.0, the new ASUS UI which indeed feels lighter than previous versions, ZenUI 3.0.

SoC Snapdragon 625 re-relied on ASUS on this smartphone, and the performance offered also looks very attractive, fairly high for the Snapdragon 625. While for the battery, this smartphone is quite confusing, where the results of video testing showed good results, while for web browsing just the opposite . ASUS offers the capability of fast charging on this smartphone, which although not the fastest, but enough to charge the smartphone battery is much faster than the average smartphone with 3000 mAh without the capability of fast charging.

Connectivity is one of the shortcomings of this smartphone, where ASUS still does not offer support for WiFi 5 GHz and NFC. In addition, this smartphone is also only equipped with a hybrid SIM Card tray, where users must choose between using Dual Nano SIM or one Nano SIM and one Micro SD. Fortunately, this smartphone has a large enough internal storage, which may be enough to reduce the need for use of Micro SD.
